Here are some more shots of one of the Modern Nomads, our man Ian Battrick. The Modern Nomads are a group of surfers who have been doing what it takes in this modern world of luxury surf tours and million dollar boat trips that some of the other soul surfers out there revel in. Check back soon for more…
Our good mate Ian Battrick made it back up to Iceland this past week to make sure all was well and right at his favorite glacier. With the recent volcanic activity and the frigid (to say the least) water temps, I wondered why anyone in there right mind would be so excited to be there. That is until I saw the pictures of empty, firing beachbreaks and it all became quite clear. Everything we are looking for is out there somewhere, it just depends on how hard you are willing to look….
“I hope you boys are all well and having a great weekend there!! Whats been on? First few sunny days here…….but typically just gone flat with it.
Stumbled on these today from France, they have been used in mag now, so cool if need for anything or a blog shot…thought id send them over”
Thanks Ian, much appreciated my friend…
Check out these shots of Ian Battrick`s recent trip to Canada with the Turner brothers!
Also here are a couple of quotes from the trip I pulled of the SurfersPath website…
“Every morning and night we had bears all over the place, on occasion even coming right into our camp. One night we even had a cougar fight happening outside our tents. In the water there were killer whales, sea lions, seals, whales… The place is so alive. It’s basically like an Attenborough documentary but with you in the middle of it.”
Sound like fun? Oh yeah, here is another one…
“We were there for three weeks and the first eight days were totally dead flat. Then on the first good day we had, Timmy hit the reef hard pulling into one at low tide, cracking a few ribs and splitting his helmet open. ”
Definitely not a trip for the faint of heart! Check out the rest of the shots below and more on the trip here…
Here are a few more shots from the International Surfing Day (ISD) event up at Brookhurst street up in HB on Saturday.
There was actually quite a good turnout, especially considering the fact that it was raining on and off all morning. I almost turned around and went home, thinking that it would get rained out, but I am glad that I didnt!
There were a number of people displaying there goods and giving away gear from Doc, to Vans, to the event organizer, Surfing Magazine. Hundreds of people showed up to help clean the beach, grab a free t-shirt and test out the latest and greatest from Doc, including the new 5`5 Doc Aviso!
The 5`5 was in the water from the moment that I brought it down, to the moment I left! From 16 year old groms to 4o year old vets, the New Toy is definitely making a name for itself. Multiple people agreed that it was the best board they rode that day, and I even had a few people tell me about how they have been riding there New Toy religiously since Doc released that model a year or two back!
After the event up in Huntington Beach, I headed back down south to San Clemente to get ready for our friends party. My roommates band The Secret People played for a packed house, and everyone celebrated Summer Solstice in style! Even Cole showed up for a bit with his wife Dana, which is always a blast!! Here are a few pics I snapped off..
Also Summer is now in full swing so get those grovelers ready. Now more than ever you will appreciate that BD3, New Toy , or RNF when u are catching all the waves and your friends are bogging on their shortboards!!
Ian Battrick has been blowing up in the mags lately from the UK to the good old US of A. Ian is a great guy, and pretty much a true hellman from the shots I have been seeing of him lately. Be it cold water slabs close to home, or warm water reef passes miles away, Ian is always on point and on his Aviso!
Check out part of this email he just sent over yesterday…
“Hope all is well there and you guys are scoring a few waves!!
Sat in my van, in the rain, poaching the internet from being parked outside some random Norweigans house….a month down now in driving around alot of coastline looking for waves!
